“The Boys of Riverside” is This Year’s Riverside Reads Selection
Book explores three-time high school football champions at California School for the Deaf Riverside
RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The Riverside Reads program of the Riverside Public Library has chosen “The Boys of Riverside” as this year’s selection, in partnership with the California School for the Deaf, Riverside. A kick-off event with author Thomas Fuller to celebrate the local deaf community will be held at 3 p.m. March 15 at the La Sierra Senior Center with ASL interpreters present.
The book, with the full title of “The Boys of Riverside: A Deaf Football Team and a Quest for Glory,” chronicles the California School for the Deaf Riverside’s high school football team and its drive to become three-time champions. Fuller is a New York Times reporter and San Francisco Bureau Chief.
The book has been described as “a fascinating portrait of deafness in America, the inspirational brotherhood among the players, and the head coach who spearheaded and advocated for the team.”
Riverside Reads will conduct several events through March and April, including community book discussions and several events at the California School for the Deaf Riverside (CSDR), including a 5K run, an ASL program, a tour of the school and exhibitions in the social hall, and a college and career day. The author event and all book discussions will have ASL interpreters.
Riverside Reads is an annual program that provides an opportunity for the community to have a shared reading experience and to participate in engaging discussions. The book title is selected based on topics that may be of social or historical significance to the community.
In addition to print and digital copies that can be checked out from the library, free copies of the book are also available at all library locations while supplies last.
