City of Riverside Seeks Input on Eastside Smart Growth Grant Funds Application

State Transformative Climate Communities (TCC) grant offers opportunities

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The City of Riverside will hold two community meetings to hear residents’ ideas for how to use funds that could be obtained from a state grant designed to improve public health, better the environment, and create economic opportunity in the Eastside neighborhood.

The Transformative Climate Communities grant program is designed to incorporate community concerns into decisions about how to spend state funds to reduce pollution in areas that historically have been hard hit. The Eastside neighborhood, roughly between downtown and UC Riverside, qualifies for such funds.  Two awards of $28.2 million each are available in the current grant round.

Potential projects include the construction of affordable housing, the creation of sustainable transportation options, tree planting and other “urban greening” options, and projects that could improve the energy efficiency of local buildings.

Two meetings have been scheduled to discuss potential projects that could be funded by such a grant. The meetings are part of an ongoing public outreach process and are scheduled for:

  • 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 29, at the Cesar Chavez Community Center, 2060 University Ave. This meeting will include a list of potential projects and an opportunity for the community to provide feedback.
  • 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 14, also at the Chavez Center. This meeting will include a formal presentation of which projects have been chosen for the grant application and a question/answer session on what happens next.

More information about the grant can be found at www.riversideca.gov/eastside or by emailing [email protected] or by calling Jeff McLaughlin at 951-826-5649.
