Comedy/Music Show in Riverside Sunday to Benefit Sister City of Cuautla, Mexico
Proceeds from performances by Platanito and others to benefit victims of earthquake damage
RIVERSIDE, Calif. – A comedy show to benefit victims of earthquake damage in Riverside’s Sister City of Cuautla, Mexico, has been scheduled for 5 p.m. Sunday (10/1) at the Fox Theater, 3801 Mission Inn Avenue.
Tickets are $20, and proceeds will go to assist people in Cuautla and Jojutla, a city close to the epicenter of the magnitude 7.1 earthquake. Scheduled acts include comedians Platanito and Chupitos, as well as entertainers Alberto Acuña and Kike Meneses.
“Our friends in Cuautla are struggling, and Riverside is stepping up to help,” Mayor Rusty Bailey said. “We are very fortunate to have such capable partners who can put together such an event on short notice for people who are very much in need.”
The event is a cooperative effort of the Alvarez Lincoln Jaguar, City of Riverside, Live Nation, Cardenas Markets and numerous other sponsors. Tickets can be purchased at www.livenation.com or www.ticketmaster.com.
“This is a great opportunity for people around Southern California to enjoy an evening of comedy and music while also contributing to a great cause,” said event organizer Ramon Alvarez, owner of Alvarez Lincoln Jaguar. “Mexico is a major trading partner with the United States, and our Sister City relationship with Cuautla has helped facilitate trade and cultural exchanges between the two areas. This is an important event where we can show our unity and support for Cuautla and Mexico.”
Damage in the Mexican state of Morelos has been especially severe in Jojutla, destroying the town’s market, which is a major part of the local economy. Hundreds of homes have been damaged, and at least 16 people have been killed. Volunteers have stepped up in the area to distribute sandwiches and water, but the need remains great.
“Many Riverside residents who have friends or family in Mexico are very concerned about the damage that has occurred and the humanitarian needs that remain,” Mayor Pro Tem Jim Perry said. “Many in our community already have donated to disaster relief, and this event provides another opportunity to give.”
Cuautla, population 145,000, has been a Sister City to Riverside since 1968. Riverside Fire Department personnel frequently travel to Cuautla to train their counterparts in firefighting techniques, and to donate decommissioned vehicles that can longer be used in Riverside.
Riverside’s eight other Sister Cities include: Sendai, Japan, since 1957; Ensenada, Mexico, since 1976; Jiangmen, China, since 1997; Gangnam, Korea, since 1998; Hyderabad, India, since 2000; Obuasi, Ghana, since 2008; Erlangen, Germany, since 2001; Can Tho, Vietnam, since 2015.
