Panorama Road Quiet Zone Project Cuts Noise for Area Residents
RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Residents near the railroad crossing at Panorama Road are living with less train-related noise following the recent installation of a $1.2 million Quiet Zone project with street and rail improvements.
Trains passing through the crossing will no longer routinely sound their horns as a result of the project, which was overseen by the city’s Public Works Department and funded by special Measure A funds from the Riverside County Transportation Commission.
Improvements to the area include:
- Upgrades to the road crossing configuration with the latest railroad signal equipment for warning motorists.
- Upgrades to the pedestrian crossing with new concrete sidewalks and detectable warning tactile strips.
- Widening and upgrades to the bikeway crossing with the latest railroad signal equipment, new emergency swing exit gates and detectable warning tactile strips.
- Installation of new hand railing and fencing.
- Repaving of the street and installation of new traffic signing and striping.
- Removal of the existing automated horns.
While the train horns will no longer be routinely sounded at the Panorama crossing, a train’s engineer may sound the horn if conditions warrant. For example, the horn could be sounded if pedestrians or animals are near the tracks at any point or if there is ongoing construction work.
